She began as The Madonna and child, as a symbol of motherhood I’ve always found comfort in despite not being catholic myself and as a nod to my Italian Grandmother, who had her imagery on the walls of her home.
In the last few weeks however, as I carved her face, and put folds in the fabric dressing her head, she reminded me of other mothers I’ve seen recently in photographs that will stay with me forever. To me she has taken on a different meaning, she has started being a symbolism of so many Mothers, and a symbol of the unity amongst us all.
The mothers pain, grief and isolation, the mothers joy, strength and determination and above all she is the mothers love. The love that unites all mothers and all children and that remains the same in every language, every religion, and every place on this earth.
The love that connects the mother whispering goodbye to her child amongst rubble, beneath fire stained skies, to the mother oceans over, who weeps burning tears of grief for this loss and pain.
The love that connects the mother who fills her children’s days with joy, despite drowning quietly under the weight of isolation, to the mother who’s left that darkness, but in a heartbeat would put out a hand to hold anyones who’s still there.
The love that fuels the fight, that knows to stand for mothers at all means standing for them all. From those who are forgotten by a broken society which leaves them isolated and unsupported, to those fighting for their lives and the lives of their children.
The love of all the mothers that came before and all those that have yet to become, that holds any mother and any child and will fight until they are all safe and free, until the end of time. For this love is as old as the womb we all came from and as old as the earth to which we will all return. It is eternal.
She is not just Madonna or Mary, she has many names, for she is not one mother, she is all.
